Requirement

Capturing and Visualizing Telemetry Data

Removing, perforating, cutting, welding: Jenoptik's laser technologies support original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) along the entire value chain. The market for laser cutting and perforation is particularly competitive: Jenoptik's stated goal is to increase its market share here in the medium term. By supplementing highly complex laser systems with digital additional services, even more attractive products with data-based added value are to be created. The starting point for these services is the collection of telemetry data, including raw data such as humidity, voltage, power consumption, compressed air, temperatures, and operating modes. These measurements provide insight into the condition and life cycle of the laser systems. Qualitative parameters, such as process time, operating time until the first output, daily part counter, power consumption, etc., are also to be collected in the future.

In this way, Jenoptik aims to identify error sources and causes during the use of laser systems on an ad hoc basis, monitor and optimize power consumption. The laser system supports the effort to save energy in production. At the same time, response times for deviations are to be reduced, among other things through remote diagnostics. Even the final serviced OEM customers themselves should be granted insights into the status of the plants and their condition data through dedicated self-services, dashboards, and monitoring.

Solution

Building a Data Analysis Platform

Initially, Telekom MMS provided Jenoptik with comprehensive advice on the new business model. A key element was the analysis of competition, trends, target groups, business cases, and data. Based on this knowledge base, use cases for new data-driven business models were developed, which were then represented as a minimum viable product (MVP). The prerequisite for this is real-time telemetry data from the plants, which are collected by already installed sensors. Telekom MMS advised on the selection of gateways and data formats and accompanied the commissioning of the gateways. The technological foundation used for the MVP to capture, evaluate, and visualize the telemetry data on KPI dashboards is the IIoT platform "Cloud-Shopfloor-Intelligence (CSI)". The solution is based on the Microsoft Azure Cloud and was developed by Telekom MMS. It includes pre-built Azure services that meet the IIoT requirement of quickly integrating sensor data and visualizing it. At the same time, individual adaptation is possible with regard to the data model, customer-specific user interface, and authorization concept. The current status of the Jenoptik laser systems can now be monitored seamlessly on dashboards, and remote access and remote maintenance are also possible.

Benefit

Digital Services as a new Business Model

With the development of the MVP "JENOPTIK MyServ®", Jenoptik is taking a significant step towards future viability while creating the basis for expanding its portfolio. By supplementing the core product JENOPTIK VOTAN® A with digital services, Jenoptik customers will be able to access an even more attractive overall package in the foreseeable future.

Additionally, the operating conditions and utilization of the machines are no longer a black box for the customer: By transmitting the telemetry data, both Jenoptik and the customers can monitor data on production-critical KPIs such as overall equipment effectiveness, power consumption, or the respective production step. This enables entirely new approaches to the qualitative and cost-related optimization of production.

Moreover, remote monitoring of real-time data supports faster and more cost-effective diagnoses, which helps to avoid production disruptions. Analyses can now be conducted without the delay and expense of travel, and form the basis for targeted and well-planned maintenance and/or repair work on site. The insights from the ongoing operation of the robots are also continuously incorporated into Jenoptik's product development. This development is the basis for AI-supported services that Jenoptik is already working on for the future.
