Experts from Telekom MMS took on the task and integrated an AI-based tool that transcribes the speaker's words and also translates them live into other languages.

Digitizing Presentations and Making Them Accessible

As a non-profit association dedicated to promoting scientific progress in agriculture and the food industry internationally, the DLG organizes trade fairs and conferences on topics such as agricultural technology, crop production, animal husbandry, forestry, renewable energies, and food production. The parallel stage presentations by experts and companies are intended to reach a large audience. In order to optimize the audience's understanding of the presentations, the DLG wanted a tool that would simultaneously transcribe the presentations into written form (speech to text) and optimize the text output for a large stage monitor.

At the same time, there was a requirement to translate the presentations live into other languages. To this end, the transcribed text was to be made available to listeners via a QR code on their mobile devices. After selecting the desired language, an audio output (text-to-speech) was to be provided. Other important points that the Telekom MMS team had to consider were easy access and guaranteed functionality of the AI solution for 100 listeners at the same time.

Solution

AI-Based Speech Recognition and Translation With “TranscribbyAI”

Telekom MMS developed a suitable application based on Azure AI Services: the transcription tool “transcribbyAI,” which integrates the latest AI language models provided by Microsoft. Using the AI solution is very easy: DLG employees can get started without any prior technical knowledge. All that is needed is a client, such as a laptop, which can receive the audio stream and call up the web app for processing the data. Automatically scaling cloud functions and a message broker are also integrated. This makes it quick and easy to use at conferences and trade fairs.

TranscribbyAI already passed its first test at Agritechnica, the world's leading trade fair for agricultural technology. Telekom MMS provided the necessary infrastructure on five stages simultaneously. The AI tool transcribed presentations, displayed them as text on monitors, and translated them into five languages for 100 listeners each. The audience members were then able to follow the respective presentation individually in their desired language via text output on the screen or via a smartphone app. The organizer, DLG, was supported by Telekom MMS experts for eight hours a day over six days at the Agritechnica trade fair.

The AI tool itself has great potential: the number of available translation options has been set at five languages for the DLG, although “transcribbyAI” can handle more than 100 languages. The number of listeners can also be flexibly adjusted.
