Cycling is good for your health – and for the climate. After all, individual traffic accounts for 19.4 percent of private CO₂ emissions – that's about two tons per citizen per year. However, switching to bicycles for shorter distances is not made easy for those interested: There are often not only no continuous bike paths, but also no safe parking facilities along the way. Because 700 bicycles are stolen in Germany every day. Expensive e-bikes are particularly sought after by thieves.

RWC Factory GmbH offers customizable bicycle garages in public spaces as a contribution to the mobility revolution. To make their VELOBRIX bike parking system even more accessible to users, the team developed an app in collaboration with Telekom MMS that turns the smartphone into a navigator and key.

A digital solution for simplified use of bike boxes

VELOBRIX bike parking boxes can be rented for short periods or used for the permanent storage of e-bikes and bicycles – a secure and practical solution, especially in large cities. E-Charging options can also be integrated into the sustainably built containers.

For both occasional and long-term users, registering and booking at the stationary terminal was previously the only way to access their security box. Even long-time customers had to log in again and again at the terminal and identify themselves with their EC card.

However, to provide these functions more easily and without barriers at all box locations, the company was also looking for a smart, digital solution. The goal was to simplify the process of finding a freely available box, as well as access, booking, and opening it for their users.

Smart app navigates to the bike box and opens it

In collaboration with Telekom MMS and with the support of Deutsche Telekom, which pre-financed the entire sustainability project, the VELOBRIXapp was created, which makes using the VELOBRIX bike park system much easier.

Tenants can use the map function to check the availability of free parking spaces in real-time and get live navigation to the next free VELOBRIX parking station. Additionally, there is the option to transfer bookings to the app. Once you arrive at the bike garage, the app then serves as a key to the box.

Regular login at the stationary terminal is no longer necessary, as only a one-time registration is required in the app. Bookings and payment transactions can be tracked and viewed without a lengthy search. The app itself is designed so that additional features can be integrated in the future to complete the overall experience for users. For example, it is conceivable that several long-term users share a box, or that the app becomes a smart companion.

Benefit

Easy handling of the box creates higher acceptance

RWC Factory is expanding its service offerings with the VELOBRIX app and creating new customer experiences: the integrated location map makes it much easier to find an available box, saving time and unnecessary trips. The handling of the bike boxes is also made easier with the app: setting up and taking out the bike is much faster, as there is no longer a need to log in at the terminal. Bookings and payments can also be better tracked via the app. Bicyclists are encouraged to use this theft-proof and practical storage option for their own bicycles and small luggage due to the user-friendly handling of the boxes. And the physical box key can no longer be lost. The transition to the climate-friendly mode of transportation, bicycles, is thus greatly facilitated.

The RWC Factory company itself makes a significant contribution to the transportation revolution and sustainable mobility with its overall concept. The app increases the attractiveness of the VELOBRIX bike park system, and at the same time, it allows for more efficient use of the boxes, resulting in higher revenues.
