Increased Efficiency by Active Data Utilization

More about the project

The Path to Becoming a Data-Driven Company

As a manufacturer of pharmaceutical primary packaging and drug delivery systems, Gerresheimer AG has been growing dynamically for years. A historically decentralized organizational structure and a number of acquisitions have resulted in inconsistent data structures, which make it considerably more difficult to evaluate and analyze financial and production data across the group. For this reason, an initiative was launched at the company's headquarters in Düsseldorf, in collaboration with several production sites, with the aim of creating a group-wide data platform that structures, cleanses, and prepares data in a uniform manner, making it easily accessible and usable. Processes can now be designed more efficiently at the sites and across the company, problem areas can be identified, and growth potential can be tapped.

Anforderungen

Company-Wide Standardization and Centralized Data Collection

Gerresheimer has a long and eventful history. In recent years, the company has been on an expansion course both nationally and internationally with the opening of new production sites and acquisitions.  Until now, different business units and production sites have operated largely autonomously, working with individual purchasing and warehousing processes and using different IT systems, including several different SAP clients.

As a result, the decentralized processing of the data generated did not allow for a consistent company-wide view of key performance indicators relevant to decision-making. The resulting limited transparency made it difficult to manage the company at both the operational and management levels.

Parallel to the development of the data platform, a data science department was established at the company headquarters and various decentralized data departments were set up at Gerresheimer's locations. The specialists involved are continuously dedicated to company-wide data management, the development of data pipelines across customers, products, and processes, data visualization, and the development of technological and technical data science competencies.

Telekom MMS is supporting Gerresheimer on this journey as a consultant and implementation partner for the development of the data platform – at the corporate level and in various business areas.

Solution

Data-Driven Use Cases at the Corporate, Business, and Location Levels

By implementing a central data platform, Gerresheimer has created a hub for the design and implementation of numerous data-driven application scenarios. Use cases developed by Gerresheimer in collaboration with Telekom MMS included the following topics:

  • Company-wide data strategy consulting:  Integration of new organizational units during acquisitions, creation of group-wide centralized reporting, target vision for a company-wide data architecture based on Microsoft Azure.
  • Company-wide security dashboard based on Microsoft Defender4Endpoint: Device and application management, display of security scores and detected vulnerabilities and threats.
  • Global key account management: Consolidated view of key account customers across all business areas.
  • Area-specific sales reporting: Transfer of sales reports previously created manually in Excel based on SAP to digital sales reporting.
  • Warehouse management and demand forecasting: Key figures such as warehouse utilization, delivery status, and inventory levels are updated daily, demand forecasts are created and compared with inventory information to achieve an optimal balance between inventory and production.
  • Procurement: Creation of a procurement BI solution as a central dashboard for a company-wide overview of who purchased what, when, from whom, and with what payment terms from which partner or supplier.
  • Process automation with the Microsoft Power Platform: Transfer of manual processes from specialist departments to PowerApps to automate existing business processes, such as the automatic creation of logs for shift handover in production.

Benefit

Efficient, Data-Based Corporate Management to Support Further Growth

Gerresheimer is already reaping considerable benefits from the central data platform: it ensures high data availability throughout the company—via a website, a mobile app, and ad hoc database queries. The uniform consistency and comparability of the data ensures greater transparency, increases the ability to act, and improves company-wide collaboration. In addition, the uniform database makes it possible to generate standard reports automatically, thereby increasing the timeliness of reports, including real-time queries. User-friendliness has also been improved. Reports can now be compiled and displayed intuitively, so that detailed system knowledge is not required for filtering or interpretation.

In sales, the data platform not only enables optimized and centralized control, but also improved customer service. Customers now have access to self-service tools that allow them to view the order or delivery status of their products, which also improves service quality. Sales managers can also track their target achievement at the customer and product level.

A cross-divisional and cross-location dashboard for IT security provides a consolidated view of security-related aspects of IT. Warehouse management has also been significantly optimized. Last but not least, management receives daily updated data and analyses, enabling them to manage the company more proactively and precisely.
